Why we carry it

The Halo is the smart lock we install most. It talks straight to your Wi-Fi, so there is no hub to buy and nothing extra to keep powered, and the Kwikset app is plain enough that most customers are adding codes for the dog walker before we have packed up the drill. The keypad model (this one) is the better buy for a front door that gets weather: buttons work with wet fingers and gloves where touchscreens sulk.

Two things we like from the locksmith's side: it keeps a real keyway with SmartKey, so we can key it to your existing house key on the spot, and the deadbolt is motorized with a 20-minute fire rating. One thing to know before you order: it needs a 2.4 GHz network. Most routers still broadcast one, but if yours is 5 GHz only, tell us and we will sort it out at install.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it need a hub or a subscription?

No. The Halo connects to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi directly and the Kwikset app is free. Alexa and Google Home work without any extra hardware.

Does it work with Apple HomeKit?

No. If HomeKit or Siri control matters to you, look at the Yale Assure Lock 2 in our shop, which supports HomeKit as well as Alexa and Google.

Can this be keyed to match my existing house key?

Yes. This lock uses a Kwikset KW1 keyway with SmartKey, so if your current locks take a Kwikset key we can re-key it to match in a few minutes — at installation, or in the shop before it ships. If your home uses Schlage keys, ask us about options before ordering.

How long do the batteries last?

Kwikset does not publish a figure; in our experience four alkaline AAs last roughly six months to a year depending on how often the motor runs and how cold the door gets. The app warns you when they are low, and the key override means you are never locked out.

Will you install it?
